A TOTAL of 85 volunteers took part in a Big Spring Beach Clean in Minehead as part of a Surfers Against Sewage’s (SAS) national effort, involving over 600 UK beaches being cleaned up over the next few weeks.

They contained 51 plastic bottles, 50 metal cans, 48 crisp packets,19 glass bottles and jars, a bin bag of paper/card, a bin bag of other plastic, a wheel and tyre, a bread tray and five bin bags of other litter
SAS spokesman Adam Reed said: “Everything recyclable was recycled. There is definitely a sense that the local community is beginning to take a stand against plastic pollution in our beaches, in our seas and the environment in general, which is really encouraging.”
The Minehead clean was organised by SAS and Plastic-Free Minehead and West Somerset, a local group working towards making the area less reliant on single-use plastic and to gain plastic-free community status.
