A BID to keep Williton open at weekends is being launched by local parish councillors. And they are focusing their efforts on making better use of the village's central public car park. At their annual meeting on Monday, councillors agreed to meet officers from West Somerset Council, which owns the car park, in the hope of securing some free parking time. Cllr Bill Vaughan said the council wanted the district officers to look at a number of issues. "The car park area at the rear of the council offices which is reserved for staff parking is empty on Saturdays and Sundays - we want to ask for that to be made available free of charge at weekends," he said. Other plans include using the land in front of the village's children's centre to hold markets at weekends, which would also generate income for the district council. And parish councillors are also calling for free parking to be available across the car park on Sundays. Parish council chairman Cllr Robert McDonald said a meeting with district officers and lead councillors was essential. "We are earnest about opening up the facilities in Williton over weekends so the village doesn't die," he said.
