POLICE in Minehead are taking to the saddle in a bid to reduce crime and get closer to communities in the town. PCs Clive Darch, Charlie Fitzpatrick and Nick Horne-Smith will now be patrolling the Minehead, Alcombe and Butlins holiday resort areas more by using pedal cycles rather than in cars. It is hoped pedal power will allow the officers, known as town centre beat managers, to get around more easily in traffic queues - and break down some barriers which driving around in cars creates. Sergeant Trevor Short, from Minehead police station, said: "These officers want to be more approachable and still provide the high level of service that this area gets from local police officers. "They also want to be able to be able to patrol those areas that cars cannot easily get to that have seen minor criminal damage occurring over recent months. "These types of offences are one of our priorities that we will be targeting to ensure that it is reduced." As part of the crime-busting initiative, local cycle shop Pompeys, of Mart Road, Minehead, is supporting the police by providing the officers with two new cycle helmets and a cycle locks. "This type of support shows we can all help to reduce crime in our communities," added Sergeant Short. "And it is good to see local companies such as Pompeys making the effort to support local officers in their efforts." Anyone wishing to discuss any local issues with their beat manager may call Minehead police station on 0845 4567000.
