CAMPAIGNERS fighting to give Watchet a dedicated war memorial have re-launched their bid to raise £18,000.

They are planning a host of money spinning events and initiatives following a poor response to the initial launch earlier this year.

More than £1,000 has already been raised for the memorial, which will stand on the town's Esplanade and be based on a design - yet to be chosen - by a pupil from Knights Templar First School.

A poem, dedicated to all Watchet's war dead, has been written by local resident Sara Summers and will be sold in a variety of forms to boost the appeal.

And the campaign team - made up of local councillors and residents - has also been carrying out a clothing collection at sites across the town this week.

Although the initiative is due to end today (Friday), anyone wanting to donate clothing for collection can call 01984 634994 until Monday.

Other fundraisers include a coffee and tea morning at Watchet's Phoenix Centre on November 27 from 10am to 3pm and a 1940s dance at the town's Royal British Legion club on December 2.

Tickets for the dance are just £2.50 and fancy dress is optional.

A spokesman for the campaign, which is being led by Major Bob MacDonald, said: "Our project depends on the goodwill of our community and its future is in the hands of local people so we hope they will support us in any way they can."
