IT was bath-night with a difference in Watchet Harbour last Thursday (August 18) when nearly 1,000 spectators cheered on 16 waterlogged competitors in the town’s first bath-tub race.

The idea was dreamed up by electrician and builder Ian Wedlake and his son Tom.

“The whole point was to try and sink each other. And as only five survived, it worked pretty well!” said Ian.

He had collected the plastic baths over the years when he had replaced them with modern models: “I’d always wanted to do a bath race and we fitted them with outriggers and buoyancy.

“But they were still pretty unstable. There was no shortage of lunatics who wanted to have a go!”
