APPLES are being celebrated in Porlock and Carhampton tomorrow (Saturday) with events in Porlock Old School Centre orchard garden and Carhampton Community Orchard.

Porlock Apple Press Group is holding an apple-themed day with a look back to old country crafts. It will centre around the group’s 1862 ’Somerset Pattern’ apple press, which will be in action.

Old rural crafts such as wool spinning and weaving, blacksmithing, basket weaving and woodland crafts will also be demonstrated, and there will e plenty of appley food.

The day runs from 10am to 4.30pm and admission is free.

Carhampton Community Orchard’s 27th annual apple day gives visitors an opportunity to sample some of its 35 varieties, many of them ancient and rare.

A selection of cookers and eaters will be on display and for sale in the Village Hall. The orchard itself will be open from 10.30am to 3pm and Apple Day celebrations include juicing demonstrations – apple-crushing takes place in the orchard from 11am until 2.30pm and members of the public are invited to bring their own apples and bottles.

The Village Hall will also have stalls selling pies, cakes, chutneys, cookery books, local honey, candles and fudge, and light lunches from noon.
