SIR — Like so many business and private users, we have been very appreciative of the recent work carried out by the highways authority in very difficult conditions, keeping our essential main roads open.
Despite limited funds, the authority did clear the B3191 through Blue Anchor when it became dangerous - again, many thanks.
With dwindling stocks, Government then decided that non-essential routes were no longer to be salted.
It was also appreciated that the authority had placed large sacks of salt/sand mixture in advance in hilly roads. We were pleased to see that Eastbury Hill had been provided with three sacks for use in emergencies.
Sadly, thieves were seen taking away this grit that had been provided for the users of this particularly dangerous hill.
Even the big white sacks disappeared until eventually no grit was available to help with an emergency.
Those who put their own interests above those of the community will probably be pleased to learn that the normally busy Eastbury Hill was all but impassable one morning last week. An important link closed by the thoughtless few.
Thank you to the highways authority which has done its best with limited resources.
It is worth repeating a big thank you to all the staff who worked such unsocial hours in awful weather conditions to ensure the essentials got through.
Olive and Jim Butterworth,
Grove Road,
Blue Anchor.
