ST Michael's First School, in Minehead, has been awarded the Activemark in recognition of its a commitment to physical education. The national accreditation is given by Sport England to schools that offer a high-level physical activity programme. To achieve the Activemark, schools must offer a well-balanced PE programme which teaches the children the importance of a healthy lifestyle and of staying active for life. Physical activities available at St Michael's includes a running club, with 187 members, which competed in the Seafront Races earlier this year and is currently training on North Hill for the Beacon to Beach run. There are four teams and the school is optimistic that it will hold on the first schools' trophy which it has won for the past two years. The Activemark was presented to PE co-ordinator and team trainer Karen Hanlon by veteran runner John Lethaby who has a grandchild at St Michael's. Karen completed the Taunton half marathon this year assisted by mum Kerri Phippen who helps with the running club. Also setting an example uis mum Debbie Hawker has just raised £1,200 after completing the London Marathon in five hours five minutes. The money will be shared between the school and the cerebral palsy charity Scope.
