West Somerset seems, so far, to have escaped the worst of Storm Eunice, but it is still having noticeable effects.

All of Somerset’s schools and colleges are shut and most council services have been put on hold.

Public transport has been suspended until at least midday.

Western Power said that 3,056 homes in Williton and Washford had lost power, but said it hoped to restore services by 12.30pm.

The RNLI in Minehead is warning people to stay out of the sea as the coast is battered by high winds.

A spokesperson said: “Despite the prevailing weather I have seen people surfing at Minehead this morning. I really need to get a warning out against anyone doing this.“They are not only putting their lives at risk, they are potentially jeopardising the lives of those who will be called out to rescue them if things go wrong.”

Reports say the road between Taunton and Minehead has been closed by a fallen tree, as has the road between Milverton and Wiveliscombe.

Unconfirmed reports on social media are describing downed phone lines, slates being ripped from roofs and trees toppled.
