This could be policed by using average speed cameras, as I would think that the majority of traffic is passing through.
A lower speed limit may well ease traffic flow in the centre, as do variable speeds on busy motorways.
Of course pedestrian crossings are important, especially outside schools, and I’m amazed they are not there already.
But how on earth does the parish council arrive at a figure of £200,000 for these improvements?
I do all my day to day and much of my business shopping in Williton and have done so since moving here nearly 33 years ago.
Williton is an amazing place for its size; you can get everything you need there.
But it is not pedestrian friendly, with the main car park across the busy road from the shops, which brings me to another point.
The parish council suggests that making the centre safer for pedestrians will boost the number of people using the shops.
This is certainly correct, but another reason people don’t use Williton is that they have to pay for parking when it is free in all supermarket car parks and in Wiveliscombe, where the centre is buzzing. But, I know, it doesn’t have the A39 running through it.
Car parking in Williton must be free. The revenue can be made up by the fines of those driving too fast through our village.
