A PETITION signed by over 1,000 people calling on West Somerset Council to keep Minehead’s public toilets open will be presented to councillors at their meeting on Wednesday, February 24, by Minehead Conservation Society members.

Minehead Conservation Society chairman Sally Bainbridge said it was essential to have detailed consultations with both the district and Minehead town councils over the future of public toilets – and particularly over rumours that toilets in the Quay West car park might be demolished to make way for building development.

The petition followed West Somerset Council’s decision to give up running the district’s toilets after April next year as part of its cost-cutting exercise.

It hopes town and parish councils will come forward to run them but has warned that if that doesn’t happen, toilets will have to close.
