WEST Somerset College Under 15s boys cricket team are the new Somerset county softball champions.

The finals of the competition took place at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton. In their opening game the Minehead Under 15s played Wellsway School and batting first they posted a dominant score of 120 runs from their 40 balls faced and then managed to restrict the opposition to 80 runs in return.

In the final the West Somerset played against Churchill School and bowled first, restricting the opposition to 85 runs from 40 balls meaning that they needed 86 to win the game.

Some excellent fielding by the boys and an excellent final over by Sam Cobb in which he took three wickets ensured the total was manageable for the WSC to chase down.

An excellent battling display by Sam saw him quickly retire at 20 which included some good shots. WSC lost a few wickets along the way before Logan Harrison took the game away from the opposition score with 24 runs from four balls, meaning they only needed 12 runs from 10 balls.

A nervy over resulted in WSC needing six from the final over and it was left to captain Sam Cobb to once again come back into bat to hit the winning boundary and spark jubilation among the WSC team.

Dave Bourne, head of PE at the West Somerset College, said: “It was a great all round effort from the boys to get this far and win the competition. Praise must go to all the boys who played their part along the way and on the day to ensure they were successful.”

The WSC boys who played in the finals were: Sam Cobb, Logan Harrison, Reiss Harrison, Harry Pursey, Lennon Howe, Charlie Tucker, Harry Milton, Billy Kelly and Harry Swann.
