MINEHEAD romped to a 6-0 win at Irnham Road on Saturday against a Street Reserves side which had beaten the league leaders the week before in a cup match.
Looking focused and energetic, they took the lead in the second minute when Jack Furse scored from the spot after the visiting keeper had brought down the lively Damion Redman inside the box.
Ten minutes later, a quick counter from the Blues saw three forwards against one defender, and Guy Burns provided the pass for Redman to double the advantage from close range.
Although not being outplayed, Street were effectively put out of serious contention on 18 minutes when Redman burst through from the halfway line to round the keeper and slot home his second.
With Minehead now looking very much in control Redman, who was being singled as the target for the over-worked visiting defenders, won the ball on the halfway line again and his pace took him to the edge of the box where he found Mike Graddon on hand to slot home.
And three minutes later it was Redman causing trouble again. He was felled by the keeper for the second time, but the official waved play on and captain Mike Mullen raced through to prod home from close range to made it 5-0 with only 30 minutes played.
Street’s first real attempt on goal came close to half-time when a rare corner was headed just wide at the far post.
Minehead took their foot off the gas in the second half, and Street showed signs of good composure and some possession, but as in the first half their shape, particularly as a defensive unit, tended to go absent without leave.
On the hour, Chris Newbold volleyed home after the keeper had parried an in-swinging corner from Furse.
More goalmouth action minutes later saw Aaron Ireton’s shot blocked on the line and then Furse’s curler from outside the box came back off the bar as Minehead threatened to run riot.
Near the end, two Street efforts from outside the box went close to finding the elusive consolation goal, and they were then denied by a miraculous save from keeper Sam Tarr from a thunderous shot from the edge of the box as he kept a clean sheet.
The final minute saw man of the match Redman blot his copybook with a booking for a remark he made.
After their sluggish start, Minehead are now up to fifth position in Division One West of the Somerset County League.
Minehead: S Tarr, C Newbold, M Cracknell, S Lynch, M Mullen, M Graddon, A Ireton, D Wilson, D Redman, J Furse, G Burns, subs A Gubb, P Smyth, G Hodgson (all used).
l Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Minehead at the Recreation Ground again in another group stage match of the league knockout cup, kicking off at 3pm.
They host Bristol side Broad Plain House, who were also relegated from the Premier Division last season and now play at the same level as Minehead but in the Eastern Division.
With all four sides in their group on three points going into their final match, the winners are sure of a place in the next round.
