WIVELISCOMBE Women travelled up the M5 to North Bristol to play against Ashley Down Old Boys in the Papa John Cup - and came away with an excellent 25-5 victory to progress to the next round of the competition.
The first whistle blew and the girls were quickly into the faces of the Old Boys, and within minutes Jess Weaver had scored the visitors' first try to put points on the board. Unfortunately, it was not converted.
Following a period of hard fought rugby the home team breached Wiveliscombe's defence to level the score 5pts 5.
Wiveliscombe raised their game and scored a second try through Sophie Pratt to make the half time score 10pts-5 to Wiveliscombe.
Wiveliscombe started the second half strongly with powerful pod play and penetrating backs play which produced two more tries for the visitors, again through Jess Weaver and Sophie Pratt. It meant the visitors were now in a commanding position at 20-5 up.
Wiveliscombe's scrums and lineouts were solid throughout the game. The visitors defence worked well keeping the Old Boys from scoring and it was Wiveliscombe who added to their score with try from Emma Weaver. FT. 5pts 25pts.
Wiveliscombe are now through to the last sixteen of the PaPa John Cup and now wait for the draw for the next round.
*Wiveliscombe play in NC2 South West (South) and are lying fourth in the table, having won two and lost two of their four matches.
The table is headed by Trojan Women who have a 100 per cent record after five matches and top the table by six points.
Wiveliscombe’s next game is at home to Chew Valley Cats on Sunday, December 14. The Cats are lying third, having won two, drawn one and lost one of their matches.
