WIVELISCOMBE began the new rugby season with an exciting 30pts-26 home win over Redruth Seconds, writes Roger Bellamy.

Playing down the slope in the first half, Wivey established a comfortable lead and looked to be securing the points for a first Western Counties West victory ot the season.

Scrum half Richard Baker crossed for Wivey’s opening try, showing good football skills when the visitors dropped the ball from a kick off to dribble the ball over the try line for the five points. Fly half Dan Quick converted. The visitors replied with a fine try from their backs, finished by pacey full back Ayden Earnshsauw.

Left wing Ryan Brewer, making his debut, finished off two of Wivey’s best moves with the home three-quarters developing the opportunity for him to cross for tries in the top corner for a 17-5 lead.. Dan Quick completed the scoring in the first half, kicking a penalty.

Redruth started the second half strongly using their large forwards to pierce the home defence, Second row Dan Viner crossed for the visitors try after a period of pressure near Wiveys try line. Fly half Adam Hall converted.

Wivey’s lead was reduced to one point following a try from centre Lewis Wills converted by Adam Hall. 20pts 19pts.

Wivey took a 27pts 19pts lead after an opportunist try from Quick which he converted but the visitors closed the home team’s lead again to one point with a try from prop Bailey Williams converted by Adam Hall.

The league points were secured with a Quick second penalty of the game. Both teams secured the four try bonus point but Wiveliscombe gave their supporters that all important League victory.
