WIVELISCOMBE went down to a 21-17 defeat against Truro in their first trip of the season to Cornwall for a Western Counties League match, writes Roger Bellamy.

However, they gave a good account of themselves, deserving to come away with more than a losing bonus point.

Their forwards and threes put together some good phases of rugby, the highlight being a brace of tries from scrum half Richard Baker who, as always, had a fine all-round game.

Winger Tom Pike crossed for Wivey’s third try with fly half Dan Quick kicking one conversion.

Wiveliscombe are one of four teams on six points in joint third place in the Western Counties League.

Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe 2nd XV beat their Wellington counterparts 39-12 at home. This local derby and Counties Three Somerset South League match was expected to be a tightly contested encounter but the home team ended up comfortable winners to secure their opening league victory of the season.

Wellington opened the scoring with a try from No 8 Matt Hugget. Wiveliscombe took the lead on 23minutes when winger Tom Westcott finished off a well worked move by the home threes, Cameron Palk adding the conversion.

Wellington retook the lead on 40 minutes with a try from prop Jack Dyer converted by Jonty Olgilvie.

Wiveliscombe scored first in the second half with a Cameron Palk penalty on 45 minutes. Centre Josh Alford scored Wivey’s second try of the game converted by Cameron Palk to give the home team a five point lead at 17-12.

The home team went on to score another four tries to complete a comfortable victory, Charlie Rowe, Jack White, Isaac Hinds and Patrick Ruell crossing for a try apiece. Palk added one more conversion.
