MINEHEAD Barbarians RFC Under 16 Girls made the trip up the M5 to play against their Hornets’ counterparts at Weston super Mare.
The visitors showed real grit because, not only were they facing a well-drilled Hornets side, they were also battling through sideways rain and freezing temperatures . However despite the conditions, the Barbarians fronted up with excellent commitment, particularly in defence.
There were some outstanding individual performances across the pitch. Alice stepped in to play hooker and took on the role confidently, showing bravery and a real willingness to learn in the set piece. Immy put in a strong shift wearing the number 4 shirt, working hard in tight and never backing away from the physical exchanges.
In defence, Molly produced a huge try-saving tackle that summed up the team’s effort, before unfortunately having to retire through injury. Katie led the way in midfield with some big hits, setting the tone and stopping momentum at key moments before taking in an injury that ended her game early.
Out wide, Layla controlled the wing superbly, shutting down space and refusing to let anything past her, while Harriett worked tirelessly through the midfield, making strong carries and gaining hard yards for the team, capped off with a well-worked tap-and-go try.
The final score of Hornets 31, Minehead 15, does not reflect the determination and effort shown by the Minehead girls.
The game was far more about the lessons learned, the experience gained, and the resilience shown in tough conditions, rather than the final outcome.
It was a performance full of heart, growth, and togetherness - plenty to be proud of as this group continues to build.
A big thank goes to Hornets for helping to fill the Minehead squad and allowing the fixture to go ahead - great rugby spirit shown.
