AFTER the complete washout of the previous week when no golf was played at all at Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club, thankfully normal service was resumed and, on Monday, the Seniors turned out to play in a Waltz competition.
After a week without golf the competition attracted a full entry of very keen players who took part in what proved to be a close result.
Leading the way with 73 points were Steve Woodbury, Tim Evans and Tony Connolly who finished one point ahead of Malcolm Overton, Bob Arthington and John Perkins. Third place with 65 points went to Martin Hole, Malcolm Bruce and Chris Garwood.
The midweek Texas Scramble was played without waterproofs; something of a novelty following the heavy rain in recent weeks. Taking full advantage of a less restricted swing were Paul Nicholson, Dave Walmsley and Tiny Welford who won the competition with nett 62. In second place with nett 63 were Roger Green, Tony Connolly and Doug Hayhoe while Sandy Lyons, John Burrow and Karl Granger took third position with nett 64.
The final Seniors’ competition of the week on Friday was a qualifying Stableford played off red tees. In a close result Doug Hayhoe won on countback with 35 points ahead of Martin Hole. Third place went to Roger Read with 34 points.
Meanwhile, competitions at Oake Manor Golf Club near Wellington have been severely restricted since the middle of December due to the very wet weather and varying course conditions.
The Hillfarrance Brook runs right through the middle of the course affecting the 16th and 17th holes.
This week’s rain has again made it difficult for players - and, of course, for the green staff who have no control over the weather! Thankfully, brighter days lie ahead.
