THE Indian contingent at Minehead Cricket Club organised a volleyball tournament at the club’s headquarters at Luttrell Way on Bank Holiday Monday.
The tournament involved six teams in total, with two coming from both Plymouth and Minehead , while there was one each from Taunton and Yeovil.
The teams were playing for the Barry Swann Cup, named after the former player and coach of the England volleyball team in the 1970s and 80s, who has since had a long and close association with Minehead Cricket Club.
After some hard fought pool matches, both Plymouth teams were eliminated leaving the semi finals with Minehead B to play Yeovil Panthers and Minehead Royals against Taunton Spikers.
Yeovil Panthers then went on to win their match by 2 sets to nil while Minehead Royals upset the favourites from Taunton to run out the winners 2 sets to 1.
In the play off match Taunton Spikers defeated Minehead B to secure third place overall in a competition which was enjoyed by everyone who took part, plus the spectators.
In the final a very determined Minehead Royals overcame the Yeovil Panthers with some outstanding defence and good team work.
At the end of a day of plenty of action, the trophy was presented to an excited Minehead Royals’ team by the volleyball legend Barry Swann.
Many thanks go to all those volunteers who helped to make the day such a success.
