EXMOOR Rangers finished their great season with the double after they beat Minehead Colts 5-1 in the final of the Taunton Saturday League's Gardner Cup at Westonzoyland.
Both local sides travelled looking forward to an action packed final with Rangers having already beaten their rivals twice in the league this season. Exmoor welcomed back Dayvd Zakharniev into the squad after he travelled back from London to play this game.
Exmoor started the better of the sides and within five minutes Adam Barker latched on to Adam Jefferies lobbed through ball and forced a superb save from Minehead goalkeeper Nat Leader, who could only parry the ball back to Barker who finished into an empty net.
It was soon after that Barker repaid the favour for Jefferies - sliding the ball between the Minehead defence to find the onrushing Jefferies who made no mistake in slotting the ball past Leader to put Exmoor two up.
At half time Exmoor would have been much the happier of the sides as they managed to hold their two-goal advantage despite a small Minehead resurgence which failed to trouble Ben Bloys in the Exmoor goal mouth.
Exmoor started the second half even quicker than the first as Josh Elston shared a sublime one-two with Jefferies, bursting into the box to finish a lovely Exmoor move.
Jefferies added his second goal to go with his two assists following an Elston corner: Aaron Scott providing a delightful assist as he back-heeled across the goal mouth leaving Jefferies with a simple back post finish.
The game was put well and truly beyond Minehead’s reach after Jefferies was brought down inside the Colts' area which he stroked home to complete a superb hat-trick.
With the game out of sight Exmoor manager Liam Shopland brought the changes - Zaharnev making his return as he looked to add to his early season goal haul.
However, it was Minehead who were able to pick up a consolation goal late on in the game - much to Exmoor’s frustration.
Exmoor were jubilant at the full time whistle as they celebrated their first ever league and cup double, a season rounded off with a dominant performance against their local rivals.
Jefferies deservedly picked up the man of the match award for his five-goal contributions but to a man Exmoor played their hearts out, barely putting a foot wrong as they capped a tremendous season.
Rangers are now looking forward to playing in the first division next season.
