MINEHEAD kept in touch with the leaders in Division One of the Under 13 section in the Somerset Girls Football League with a 2-1 home win over Swiss Valley.

After playing them the previous week and conceding a last minute goal which meant Minehead went home without the points, the Seasiders were excited for the rematch on home turf.

With Swiss Valley struggling for players, the game was played in a 10 a-side format. F rom the first whistle Minehead displayed fantastic football, with great link up play that forced the opposition into their own half and created several chances that kept spectators on their toes.

Despite the pressure and attacking play, the teams went into half time level at 0–0.

After a quick team talk, Minehead were eager to get started again. They came out with the same intensity and their hard work was soon rewarded when a well worked corner found the back of the net to give Minehead the lead.

Swiss Valley responded shortly after with a breakaway goal, bringing the score back to 1-1.

With full encouragement from the sidelines, Minehead continued to work tirelessly, defending well as a team when needed and winning the ball back quickly.

The decisive goal of the day came from some excellent link up play which found one of the forwards. A strong strike hit the post and rebounded back to Minehead’s striker, who calmly placed the ball into the top corner.

With only minutes remaining, Minehead battled hard for every loose ball, putting pressure on Swiss Valley whenever they were in possession. Determined not to repeat the disappointment of the previous week by conceding late, the girls held firm.

When the final whistle blew, Minehead were rewarded for their hard work and determination with all three points. The team now focus on their cup game this weekend.
