MINEHEAD Hockey Club Ladies 1s travelled to Bridgwater last weekend to play tough opposition in the form of Bridgwater 1s.

The game started evenly with both sides having attacks and chances to score. Bridgwater took the lead slightly against the run of play when a dubious decision from the officials led to a short corner which beat keeper Jan Weetch.

Minehead responded strongly and quickly mounted a flurry of attacks. Following a driving run from team skipper Tisshaw, a through ball found Zoey Cape who calmly finished to make it 1-1.

On the stroke of half time, Minehead were disappointed by an unreasonably harsh decision to award a penalty flick to Bridgwater, which was scored despite keeper Jan Weetch’s best efforts.

The second half followed a repeated pattern of Minehead counter attacks and Bridgwater pressure. Somewhat bizarrely, Bridgwater were awarded an unusually large number of short corners, resulting in four more goals for the newly relegated side.

Minehead’s frustrations were completed when in the dying moments, yet another short corner was awarded to the home team by their officials, leading to a final goal making the final score 6-1.

It was a disappointing and frustrating loss for Minehead despite a well-disciplined display. Dessert Club of Minehead Player of the match was Jan Weetch who put in a real shift in goal, and who’s bravery kept the score to the margin that it was.

This coming weekend sees the Ladies host Tiverton White Eagles in the early match at 10.30 at West Somerset Sports Centre, followed by the Men’s 3’s at 12.00 against Shepton Mallett, and then the 3’s host Sidmouth & Ottery 3’s. Training continues on Tuesday evenings for the Ladies at 7pm and on Wednesdays for the Men at 7.30pm at West Somerset Sports Centre.
