WILL Paton has broken the amateur course record at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club during the Fagg Cup which was played last weekend.
Will carded a superb eight under par 64 which included five birdies and two eagles. The course record had previously been challenged three times during the Somerset Mens’ County Championship, but this was an amazing achievement.
Minehead Seniors commenced the week with a Texas Scramble on Monday when the excellent conditions that prevailed resulted in some very good scores.
In a close competition, the winners on count back with a nett 59 were Trevor Stephens, Tim Evans and Neville Parsons ahead of Martin Hole, Bob Arthington and Nigel Trevelyan. In third place with nett 61 were John Burrow, Roger Read and Graham Stone.
The fourth round of the Marshall Cup was played on Friday in excellent conditions so perhaps it was no surprise therefore that the top three places were taken by lower handicap players.
In first place with a nett 69 was Steve Gay, this despite a double bogey on the par 4 17th hole. Dave Oatridge claimed second spot with nett 70 followed by Peter Young in third position with a nett 71.
The Seniors played a home match against Ilfracombe on Wednesday coming out winners by 4.5 to 1.5.
With all the thunderstorms and rain having blown through during the previous night, conditions were much improved for the Weston Cup played on Saturday.
This mixed competition (foursomes format) proved challenging especially as the wind picked up during the latter stages of the round.
Congratulations to the winning pair of Ginnette Bowyer and Nigel Trevelyan who took the honours with 37 points. In second place with 34 points were Lady Captain, Pat Lucas and Steve Woodbury.
