AS THE Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club Ladies Section gears up for the coming season, the Annual General Meeting was held at the beginning of the month.
The new captain of the ladies section Jenny Elliott was welcomed along with her vice captain Hilary Eden. Several awards were given out along with the Most Improved Player trophy. This was won by Vanessa Cleese who has just been playing for a year and who has vastly reduced her handicap during this short spell. She was presented with the trophy by Margaret Gliddon, the outgoing president.
Last week was Jenny’s first competition as captain. She went for the ‘Yellow Peril’ format. This is teams of three using Stableford scoring, taking it in turns to use the yellow ball provided - the user scoring double points. If the yellow ball is lost, however, during the round the team can continue to score, but with no double points.
The course has started to dry up nicely after this year’s appalling wet weather which has caused all sorts of probems for players - but the grass is starting to grow.
First was the team of Jenny Elliott, Pat Lucas (outgoing captain) and Hilary Eden, with a total of 119 points. Second was Nancy Marshall, Kay Luckett and Deano Carlin with 116.
This week saw the March Medal (Strokeplay) being played with a cold north-westerly wind blowing but, thankfully, there was no rain, and there were also some sunny spells. First was Caz Cape (33) with an impressive score of nett 70 - the only player to shoot under her handicap. Second was Jenny Elliott (20) with a nett 74.
Next week sees the Pontz Cup being contested for by the ladies section , which will be a Stableford competition.
