THE Seniors at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club capped off a very successful year of inter-club matches by winning the Seniors MET Shield.

This is an annual trophy which is played between Enmore Golf Club, Tiverton and Minehead and this year it was Minehead’s turn to host the event.

Despite the increasingly blustery conditions, the eight pairings representing each club managed to return some excellent scores.

Many congratulations to Andrew Bolt and Trevor Blatchford (Tiverton GC) for achieving the highest points total overall (45 points) with Chris Garwood and Mark Watson (Minehead GC) 44 points and Christopher Willsteed and Peter Farnell heading the list for Enmore GC (42 points).

Home advantage perhaps told in the end with Minehead managing to regain the trophy with 314 points, ahead of Tiverton (304 points) and Enmore (291 points).

This fixture, although always played competitively but in the right spiri, is another chance to renew longstanding friendships in the clubhouse throughout the day and during the meal afterwards.

The individual achievement of the day was by Mick Parrett (Tiverton GC) who walked off the 194-yard, par 3, 18th with a magnificent hole in one. Mick generously celebrated the event in the time-honoured way on his return to the clubhouse.

Many congratulations to Minehead Seniors’ Captain Chris Durman and his team for winning the MET Shield and to all the Seniors who have represented the club so well throughout this successful season.

Minehead Seniors played a 4BBB competition on Wednesday in beautiful warm early autumnal conditions. Setting the early pace and the winners on countback with 44 points were Graham Troman and Malcolm Bruce ahead of Dave Oatridge and Neville Parsons. Third place with 42 points went to Andy Giles and John Burrow.

Meanwhile, on a glorious Sunday afternoon, Enmore Park members competed for the Ryder Cup, a popular mixed event consisting of a cocktail of 6 better ball holes, 6 Greensomes, and 6 Foursomes scored in a two-part competition,

The trophy was awarded to the pair with the most Stableford points, and the team competition pitted Lady Captain Lorraine Taylor against Ex-Club Captain Rhys Morgan.

Like the Ryder Cup in America, the battle was highly contested, and the results were extremely close. Winners of the Ryder Cup Stableford and coming down to a countback on the last three holes were Rhys and Tina Morgan with 38 points. Just pipped to the trophy were second-place Joy and Steve MaConnachie- also on 38 points.Third and fourth places were also decided on countback, and both teams ended on 37 points; Stephen Howell and Jenny Hawkins just edged out Gary Thompson and Suzanne Boydell.

The team competition again resulted in a very close outcome. Having lost the team competition to his wife last year, Team Morgan, captain of the white team, was delighted to beat Team Taylor by 1 point. The white team's triumph earned them a small prize in recognition of their efforts.

The Ryder Cup was the last of the mixed golf trophy competitions for the year, and proved a lovely event to round things off with. Congratulations to the Enmore Park Golf Club men’s A team who won at home, and the men’s B team , who gained enough points away from home to tie, which means the Club have won the MET shield for the second year running.
