LAST week saw the culmination of the Trafalgar Trophy at Minehead Golf Club. The outcome went to the final round with only one point separating the top two placings.
The winners were Dave Oatridge and Roger Green, ahead of Rob Poirrier and Steve Gay, both pairings scoring well to take it to the wire. Finishing in joint third position were Mike O’Keefe and Karl Granger and Peter Young and Doug Hayhoe.
Scoring on the final round was excellent and again close, with all pairs except one scoring between 37 and 40 points. The exception was Roger Read and Edward Frewin who returned a superb 43 points to win the individual round six competition.
Minehead GC also hosted the Seniors’ Texas Scramble Open. Always a popular event, reflected by another large entry, this competition proved particularly eventful for Dave Hillier (Minehead GC) (Hcp 6), who stroked a magnificent 6 iron off the first tee (Par 3) to record a hole in one. Dave was generous to a fault standing everyone a drink as they came in which was greatly appreciated.
As for the competition itself, the winning score of nett 58, including eight birdies, was recorded by the final team out comprising Mark Payne, Graham Stagg and Eddie Cullen (Vivary Park GC). Many congratulations to them. In second place with nett 59 were Bob Arthington, Doug Hayhoe and Peter Young (Minehead GC). In third position on countback with nett 60 were Roger Read, Tim Evans and Nigel Trevelyan (Minehead GC).
Minehead Seniors’ played a multiplier Stableford competition to round off the week. In a close result Mike O’Keefe, Rob Poirrier and Doug Hayhoe recorded the winning score of 95 points, ahead of Mark Ruttley, Sandy Lyons and John Perkins (94 points). In third place with 87 points were Dave Walmsley, Dave Ball and Nigel Trevelyan.
