MANY congratulations go to the Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club’s team who won the final of the Somerset Golf Union Somerset Seniors Bowl for the first time in the club’s history.
The match, which was played as a foursomes format, was against Wells Golf Club and took place at a neutral venue at Long Sutton Golf Club. The result was a splendid 3-2 win for the Minehead golfers.
Neil Mossman and Simon Rudd just edged their result while the pairings of Paul Fulbrook and Dave Hillier and George Hampshire and John Proctor won their matches on the 18th hole. Congratulations to the whole team for all their efforts and commitment during the entire campaign.
The annual Skylark greensomes mixed competition was played on Sunday in torrential conditions. Congratulations to all 18 pairs who braved the constant downpour and well done to the winning pair, Gill Hurley and Neil Mossman, for taking the trophy with 39 points. Second place with 37 points went to Ruth and Paddy Maclennan while third position went to Emma Harris and Steve Woodbury with 35 points.
Turning the calendar into September, Minehead Seniors started the week with a Pineamble competition. Pin positions were not the easiest to negotiate; it was nevertheless a close competition with the winning pair of Dave Oatridge and Richard Austwick winning by one shot with a nett 71. Second place went to Trevor Stephens and Doug Hayhoe while third position was claimed by Graham Troman and Tony Connolly with a nett 73.
In squally conditions on Friday, the Seniors played a medal competition that was won by Nigel Moore who played steadily to record a par round nett 72 to win the competition on countback. Second place went to Mike Kelly while Dave Ball took third position with nett 73.
Meanwhile, the seniors section at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club started the month of September with a 132 Waltz competition. Thanks to the recent rain one or two of the fairways were beginning to ‘green up’ but the unreliable bounce remained providing quite a challenge for all players.
At the end of the day the winner’s enclosure was occupied with the team of Bob Arthington, Mark Swallow and W John Perkins who collectively amassed a very creditable 74 points.
The runners up spot with 71 points was claimed by Roger Read, Richard Austwick and Tony Connolly, one ahead of third place team which was claimed by Martin Hole, Dave Walmsley and Edward Frewin with 70 points.
The midweek competition comprised a randomly drawn pairs Texas Scramble. However there was nothing random about the winners Mark Ruttley and Dave Oatridge with a splendid nett 66 despite a particularly strong breeze. Second place on count back with a nett 70 was Trevor Stephens and Graham Troman, ahead of Martin Hole and Paul Thompson in third.
The Burgess Trophy was played on Friday. This medal competition drew another large entry. However, despite the benign conditions low scoring was not easy, blamed principally on pin placement.
Leader in the clubhouse and winner of the trophy was Roger Green who returned a nett 73. Runner up was Andy Giles (nett 74) while third on countback was Alan Ayton with nett 75 ahead of Trevor Stephens.
