JUNE has seen plenty of activity in Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club Ladies Section.
First, they were hosts the Spring Meeting for the Somerset Seniors Ladies Golf Association. This was a 3-person team Stableford competition with the best two scores to count on each hole. This is open to any Somerset Golf Club lady member over 60 years of age.
This was won by Kay Luckett (21), Ros Chidgey (23) and Lesley Davis (21), all from Minehead, with a score of 70. The highest scoring visitors were Sue Kinch (25), Cheryl Saunders (24) and Sarah Tyler (28) from Worlebury with a score of 66.
A friendly match was played at home against Tiverton. It was very windy which normally favours the home team but, in this case, Tiverton won 3-2. The format was Greensomes.
The first Ladies’ Day saw the June Medal contended for. Challenging conditions of wind and rain, described as ‘brutal’, saw Lesley Davis (23) coming in with a nett 77 to win the event. Second was Tricia Grinter (17) with a nett 80.
A Wessex match was played away at Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club. With challenging last few holes Minehead lost 5 ½ to 1 ½ .
Nine Minehead ladies, forming 3 teams, played away in the Teignmouth Golf Club ladies’ open in Devon.
The second Ladies’ Day saw the ‘Midsummer Madness’ competition - a shotgun start at 7.30am, teams of 3 with a slap-up brunch together at the end. Winners were the team of Jayne Fulwell (26), Ingrid Swinburn (34) and Hilary Eden (23). Second was the team of Ginnette Bowyer (24), Tricia Grinter (16) and Carolyn Cape (29). The format was 3 scores to count on the Par 3s, 2 on the Par 4s and 1 on the Par 5s.
