THE Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club have hosted the Skylark Trophy which is a long-standing annual fixture.

By virtue of its position in the calendar it effectively welcomes the onset of Autumn. This betterball format comprises a mixed inter-club friendly competition following which there is a meal and prizegiving and is always a very popular occasion.

Congratulations go to the winners Annette and Richard O’Hare who returned an excellent 45 points. Runners up with 42 points were Jayne Fulwell and George Hampshire with Catherine Binding and Luke Taylor in third place with 41 points.

Minehead Seniors played a Florida Scramble as their first competition of the week. The team of Peter Chapple, Rick Milliship and Graham Troman managed a nett 65 to win the competition.

Second with nett 67 were Dave Ball, Tony Connolly and John Perkins. Third place with nett 68 was thanks to some excellent long putting by Nick Garman, ably assisted by his partners Karl Granger and Roger Green.

The final Seniors summer trophy (Thistle Trophy) was played this week. This white tee Stableford competition drew a large entry and there was also a very close result.

Congratulations to Dave Walmsley who won the trophy on countback with 40 points, ahead of Karl Granger who has played consistently well throughout the year reflected in his handicap (11.8). Third place was claimed by Hannu Maki with 38 points.

*Founded in 1882, Minehead and West Somerset is the county’s oldest golf club, still playing on their original course, and one of the oldest golf clubs in the South of England.

It is a links golf course based on Somerset’s north coast, open all year round and its greens are regarded as the best in the area.

It hosts numerous PGA, county and regional events.
