MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors were bathed in glorious sunshine when they played a Pine-amble Competition in splendid weather on Wednesday of last week.

Even if the putts didn’t fall, and most didn’t, it was a pleasure just to be out on the fairways, enjoying a game of golf in good company and played in the right spirit.

Tony Connolly and Doug Hayhoe recorded a nett 67 victory on count back from Bob Arthington and Roger Green. Third place went to Dave Walmsley and Nigel Trevelyan with a nett 68.

Two days later the Seniors enjoyed another perfect late spring morning on Friday when they played a Bowmaker competition.

The fine weather ensured that there were numerous exposed limbs wandering around the course. Difficult to say which was affected more; fellow golfers or nesting Skylarks!

There were no such distractions for the winning team of John Burrow, Chris Durman and Tom Cotter who romped to a decisive win with 81 points, six points clear of their nearest rivals. Second place with 75 points on count back went to Roger Green, Mark Ruttley and Tony Connolly, who were just ahead of Mike O’Keefe, Dave Walmsley and Tim Evans who took third spot.

Meanwhile, Women’s and Girls’ golf taster sessions are being held at the Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club in the hope of encouraging more to play the great game.

Each session costs £6 and all equipment is provided (call in at the Pro Shop, which can be contacted on 01643 702057, to book a place).

Two sessions have already been held and the next event is planned for Thursday, May 22 (starting at about 5.30 p.m.). It provides an ideal opportunity to see if you would enjoy playing the game.
