OAKE Manor Golf Club captain Richard Goodman has held his Captain’s Day when more than 100 golfers played in teams of four for the “Founders Day Trophy” which was presented when the club first opened in July 1993 by the directors Michael King, Roger King and Duncan Pitt.

The winners of the trophy were past captain Mike How, past lady captain Liz How with Steve and Sarah Bond who scored a superb 95 points. In second place with 93 points were Antony Keitch, Robert Jenkins, Tim Gamlin and Gareth Morgan, while third were Paul and Gill Hadley, their son Paul Hadley and James Harvey, with 92 points. The top all ladies team were in fourth place with 88 points - Pam Akers, Alison Harman, Jenny Musgrove and Mary Wood.

A strong field took part in the “Marie Curie Shield.” John Byrne had an outstanding round, scoring 46 points which saw him two shots clear of the field to win the shield and division 2. Samuel Turner with 44 points just fell short in second place while Mitchell Couryer was third with 42 points. In division 1 Neil Blackmore came first with 40 points, Rob Berry second with 38 points and David Wheeler third with 38 points.

Dennis Lumley won the Sunday Stableford scoring 40 points, Sam Prior was second with 38 points while Michael Tourle third, also with 38 points.

Janet Howe won the Ladies Sunday Stableford, scoring 40 points, Patricia Frazer came a close second with 39 points while Mary Beakes was third with 37points.

In the Ladies Tuesday Stableford Pepita Verge was the overall winner, coming first in division 2 with 41 points, Suzie Pitt was second with 40 points while Catherine Drysdale third with 38 points. In division 1 the first three players all scored 40 points but on count back Alison Harman came first, Kate Foster second and Liz How third.

In the Wednesday Midweek Stableford, Ryan Warfield was overall winner with an excellent 44 points in division 2, Alexander Male came second with 41 points while Anthony Birtwhistle was third with 38 points. Anthony Date won division 1 with 40 points, Brendon Craggs was second with 37 points and Josh Martin third with 35 points.

Meanwhile, the seniors at Minehead & West Somerset started their week by playing a Pinehurst on Monday. Despite challenging conditions, the scores were very close except for the winning pair comprising Richard Austwick and Tim Tennant who stormed to a nett 63, five ahead of their nearest rivals. Second place on countback with nett 69 went to Dave Ball and Graham Troman who just edged out Chris Durman and Pete Heddercott, also recording nett 68s.

On Wednesday the first round of the Seniors’ White Tee Medal was played when the front nine proved the most challenging.

While scoring was generally close, Frazer Lawrence enjoyed a magnificent round, recording a nett 62, a score which gave him a huge advantage to take into round two.

Only seven players managed to better par which included Dave Oatridge, Edward Frewin and Steve Gay, who carded nett 69s. The second round saw Oatridge sustain his good form with nett 68 along with Paul Saunders to share the honours for the individual round. However, the overall winner was Oatridge, with Lawrence taking second place. Third place went to Willie Brown with rounds of 70 and 72.
