MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors started their week on the Monday with a Multiplier Competition which was won by the team of Steve Gay, Doug Hayhoe and John Perkins with 87 points.

Second place on countback with 84 points were Steve Woodbury, Roger Read and Tony Connolly with Dave Oatridge, Mark Swallow and Malcolm Bruce taking third position.

Wednesday’s Pinehurst Greensomes competition was played in a biting north wind which effectively confirmed the wearing of shorts will be deferred until next Spring! Despite the conditions, some very good scores were returned. In first place on countback with nett 72 were Tim Evans and Dave Oatridge, ahead of Malcolm Bruce and Martin Hole. Third position with nett 73 was claimed by Chris Durman and Paul Thompson.

The first frost of the year welcomed the Seniors to the tee on Friday for a qualifying Stableford competition. The greens proved challenging as the frost thawed out although not so for Dave Walmsley, who stroked his way to a winning total of 37 points. Tim Evans took second place with 36 points followed by Mark Watson with 35 points.

Meanwhile, a group from Enmore Park had the honour of going to a lunch in the Long Room at Lord’s in celebration of the County Cricketers’ Golf Society’s 90th anniversary.

The guest speakers were ex-Hampshire CCC captain and TV pundi, Mark Nicholas, who is currently Chair of the MCC, and professional golf caddy Billy Foster. They entertained the audience with tales of some of the icons of their respective sports, which included Viv Richards and the late Seve Ballesteros.

The invitation came about because Enmore host an annual fixture with the County Cricketers, when they play for the Jerry Lloyds Trophy. A very good time was had by all, and a sizeable sum was raised for charity.
