MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors played for the Dixies Bogey Qualifier last week. This is a hugely popular competition and drew a full tee sheet and resulted in a very close finish.
Three players returned a score of +5, but after count back the winner was Deano Carlin; the runner up was Steve Woodbury with Andy Hodgson taking third place. Despite the intense heat both Deano and Steve carded their best rounds ever.
Deano scored a gross 81 (nett 66) while Steve managed a gross 73 (nett 64) which, given the conditions, were quite astonishing. Many congratulations to the top three for a superb performance.
The week concluded with yet another trophy competition, The Seniors’ White Tee Medal Roy Bishop Qualifier which again drew a full house.
The warm spell continued while a brisk wind picked up to provide a challenging back nine. Conditions undoubtedly suited the lower handicap players and so it proved.
Steve Gay put together a blistering round to return a gross 75 (nett 65) and deservedly win the trophy. Second place with nett 68 went to Chris Durman while Dave Walmsley took third position with nett 70.
Also, recently, the Seniors played the fourth round of the Marshall Cup, at the conclusion of which the winning score belonged to Tim Evans with a nett 69. He was followed by a resurgent Malcolm Bruce in second position with a nett 70.
Third place was taken by Bob Arthington (nett 71), with all to play for in the final round.
A Multiplier competition began the week where the team of John Perkins, Tim Evans and Karl Granger won decisively with 84 points. In second position were Roger Read, Graham Troman and Neville Parsons with 81 points. Mark Ruttley, Richard Austwick and Mike O’Keefe took third lace with 70 points.
