THE feature competition of the week at Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club was the Mens’ Seniors 4BBB Open.
An excellent field comprising 44 pairs took part and with the course in good condition together with the benign weather, it was expected that scoring would be good - and so it proved.
The winning total of 48 points was achieved by two pairs; however, Tony Bowden and Nigel Gardner (Minehead) took the honours on countback from Alan Bissell and Paul Fulbrook, also from the home club,Third place went to another Minehead pairing Dave Hillier and Chris Durman on countback with 45 points.
This week also saw a blast from the past in terms of golfing heritage when the club hosted the inaugural Somerset Hickory Championship.
As the oldest links course in Somerset, it seemed fitting to hold this event with competitors drawn from throughout the South-West and playing with hickory shafted clubs from the pre-1930s. Many players also dressed for the occasion adding a sense of authenticity.
The event was closely fought with the inaugural champion Andrew Brown (St Enodoc GC) scoring 36 points. narrowly beating Hannu Maki (Minehead) with a better back nine score. Paddy Maclennan (Minehead) claimed third place with 33 points.
On Friday, Minehead Seniors played for the New Century Cup (Greensomes format) to wrap up another busy week. Wall to wall sunshine and not a breeze to be felt provided ideal golfing conditions where the focus was negotiating and judging the concrete fairways.
Many congratulations to Steve Gay and Malcolm Bruce for having no such problems and decisively winning the cup with nett 64. Runners up with nett 67 were Doug Hayhoe and Sandy Lyons while third place went to Mark Ruttley and Kevin Garner with 69.
