MINEHEAD’S hopes of winning their last match of the season in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League were dashed when they lost 2-1 away to Clutton.

It was a particularly disappointing result for the seasiders who had played some of the best football of the season to beat Wrington Redhill 3-0 on their own ground only three days earlier.

Minehead, who paid the penalty for missing a number of scoring chances, had been chasing the season’s double over Clutton, having beaten their rivals 5-0 at home in late November.

Minehead manager Lee Todd said: “We played really well but we simply could not score - we missed loads of chances.

“They basically had two chances in front of goal and scored two goals. It was one of those days when the ball simply wouldn’t go in for us.”

Clutton led 2-0 at half-time and held on to their lead until 15 minutes from the end when Minehead pulled a goal back through their goalkeeper Greg Turner who took a free-kick from his own half and the ball bounced before going over the head of the home side’s goalkeeper.

“On the day we certainly deserved to come away with at least a point,” added Todd. “But it was simply not to be. However, the real time to worry is when you don’t create chances and we certainly had our fair share at Clutton.”

Minehead: Turner, Burge, Morris, Harvey-Lovell, Prescott, Harvey-Lamar, Jackson, Barnes, Griffiths, Waghorn, Burns. Substitues: Pope, Reaney.

Elsewhere, Combe St Nicholas thrashed lowly Bishop Sutton 14-0 at home to open up a four-point lead at the top of the table and stay on course for the title.

Ashcott won 3-0 at home against Peasedown Miners Welfare to move up to third place in the table while Wrington Redhill beat Winscombe 5-3 away.
