WATCHET Town finally recorded their first win of the season in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League last Saturday when a first half penalty from captain Charley Clausen proved sufficient to overcome Congresbury at the Memorial Ground.

At times the Red & Blacks had to dig deep with some resolute defending and on this occasion the fine margins of fortune seemed to go their way.

With the pitch looking in ideal condition honours were fairly even early on but it was the home side who took the lead. Makeshift striker Charley Clausen nodded a ball forward to Billy Jones who was tripped as he beat a defender inside the box and the former put away the spot kick.

The visitors pressed strongly for a spell with one effort going inches wide and another coming back out off the inside of an upright. Just before the break Jones wriggled clear at the other end only to see his low drive tipped onto a post and across the face of the goal.

Watchet had a lot of defending to do in the second half, but they dealt successfully with a series of crosses as Congresbury were unable to maintain their attacking threat. They were restricted to off-target attempts from outside the box while Jones bought Watchet breathing space by ploughing a valuable lone furrow.

After he had deflected Clausen”s header over the bar Watchet were left sweating into a vast amount of stoppage time which saw keeper Jack Harding cap another fine display with a close range save low down by a post and the win was secured.
