WATCHET followed up last week’s unexpected success with another fine away win on Saturday at Fry Club of Keynsham.
A goal in each half without reply brought the visitors a morsel of revenge for their Somerset County Senior Cup final defeat in May against opponents who have Western League aspirations.
Following a second successive long trip on a sunny day, Watchet surpassed their showing at Frome with a solid and hard-working team performance against last season’s Premier Division runners-up.
They achieved their first objective of quelling their hosts’ early attacking intentions by keeping their discipline and helping each other out.
Home strikers Thompson and Brown finally found enough space to send carbon copy shots narrowly wide of the same upright before the visitors threatened with Aaron Deeks showing good control and clever use of the body.
Watchet had a scare when a close-range header from a free-kick went over the bar and then a jinking run from a midfielder ended with a tame shot, but having survived, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock.
Connor Jeromson challenged a defender at the far post for Chris Sully’s free-kick and the ball dropped conveniently at the feet of an unmarked Deeks who steadied himself before finding the back of the net from close range.
Another home attempt passed too high before the interval arrived with keeper Adam Bishop not having been seriously tested.
Beginning the second half with something to hold onto, Watchet received the bonus of doubling their advantage within ten minutes.
A right wing corner played in low by Deeks eluded two players and the keeper at the near post, and Jeromson arrived in the goalmouth to turn the ball clearly over the line before it was hacked clear.
The visitors continued to snuff out the Fry attacking menace with sheer graft all round and intelligent reading of situations, and as the half wore on the hosts appeared to run out of ideas.
After Bishop had misjudged a punch which led to Brandon Walsh clearing off the line, Ben Robinson and Jason Worth went close to catching the home keeper out as he strayed from his charge before Deeks latched onto a through ball from substitute George Dawson to outfox his marker but dragged his shot just wide.
Deeks then went close to lobbing the lanky home custodian and at the other end Bishop was finally called upon for his first major contribution when he denied Fry a sniff of a comeback by advancing off his line to block the usually prolific Brown’s shot with an outstretched foot.
Watchet: A Bishop, L Rogers, B Walsh, M Heywood, B Robinson, A Clausen, C Jeromson, C Sully, J Worth, I Lowe, A Deeks, subs G Dawson, B Jones, C Knight (all used).
l To add to their missing cricketers, the Red &and Blacks are also without both goalkeepers and Brandon Walsh for tomorrow’s trip to play Nailsea and Tickenham, who have also won both games to date (3pm).
