MINEHEAD AFC hosted a past players vs current players game in celebration of two of its longest serving players, Guy Burns and Stefan Phillips, in front of a huge crowd.
The game started as an evenly contested match, with the first opportunity coming the way of the Minehead team, where a neat move down the left-hand side gave Ollie Morris an opportunity just inside the area, but his acrobatic effort went narrowly over.
Shortly after the Minehead team took the lead, through a clever finish by Toby Waghorn inside the penalty box.The past players team grew into the game and were unlucky to see a penalty shout waved clear by the referee, following a clever interception by Gareth Morgan.
The Minehead team continued to be a threat on the counterattack, and Alfie Lyons, son of former Minehead and Torquay player Simon Lyons, was sent through on goal, only to be caught narrowly offside. Just before half time Morgan saw his clever finish ruled offside following good work by Harry Scatchard.
The second half saw the game’s best moment when Aaron Deeks was introduced and within five minutes played a sublime through ball to Phillips, who slotted the ball past Chris Meredith in the Minehead goal to equalise. It was Phillips again, who had a great opportunity to give the past players team the lead but missed the target from 12 yards..
The remainder of the game saw both team utilise all players in the blistering heat and without any further clear-cut chances the game finished 1-1.
A penalty shoot out concluded a great game, with the past players winning 4-3.
Minehead chairperson Jason Hill said: “Twenty years service to any club at any level is a fantastic achievement for both Guy and Stefan and one they should be incredibly proud of.”
