MINEHEAD found themselves with a blank Saturday after their away match against Worle in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League was called off.

“We got a call from Worle on Friday to tell us that their pitch was unplayable - it had too many cracks,” said Minehead boss Lee Todd.

“I don’t know what they are going to do because there’s little rain forecast - they are going to be struggling.”

He added: “We had a few players missing but we would have been able to field a strong side. We have a particularly strong squad at the moment. Obviously it was disappointing.”

One new player included in the squad was Lewis Smith, a 21-year-old midfielder, who has played Southern League football. Smith’s footballing career has been hampered by injury and he has told Todd he would like to stay with the West Somerset club for the whole of the season.

Despite not playing, Minehead found themselves in sixth place in the table, with four points from their opening two home games.

Peasedown Miners Welfare and Westfield both won their matches - against Clutton and Nailsea United Reserves - to top the table with six points while Ashcott, in third spot, dropped points for the first time when they were held to a 1-1 home draw by St George Easton in Gordano.

Saturday results in the first division: Ashcott 1, St George Easton in Gordano 1; Glastonbury 3, Wrington Redhill 1; Nailsea United Reserves 0, Westfield 2; Peasedown Miners Welfare 4, Clutton 0; Winscombe 0, Imperial 0.

Watchet Town, who lost their only game 4-1 at Clutton on the opening day of the season, did not have a fixture on Saturday, August 15.

Their match at Worle on Saturday, August 22, will also be in doubt following the poor state of the opposition’s pitch.
