MINEHEAD Blues gained a battling 1-1 home draw against Wellington Town in Division Two of the Under 12 section in the Taunton & District Youth Football League.
Minehead endured a difficult start, coming under sustained pressure during the opening 15 minutes. Much of the play was confined to the Minehead half, with Wellington earning several corners.
However, resolute defending across the team kept the visitors at bay, while goalkeeper Lou remained alert, comfortably dealing with a shot that drifted wide. As the half progressed, Minehead began to settle and grow into the game. Their work rate improved, and they started to create chances of their own.
Leon had an effort from distance that was well covered by the Wellington goalkeeper, while a series of corners and free kicks failed to produce a breakthrough. Strong defensive work continued, with George putting in excellent tackles on the left wing, and Oaklen showing skill and vision on the opposite flank, attempting to lift balls over the defensive line. The teams went into the break 0–0.
Minehead emerged for the second half with renewed energy and looked the stronger, more dominant side. Early on, Karter made a powerful run forward and got a shot away, forcing a good save from the Wellington keeper. The breakthrough came 14 minutes into the half. Leon drove forward with intent, his initial shot blocked by the goalkeeper. Reacting quickly, he regained control of the rebound and calmly slotted home.
Wellington responded by pushing forward aggressively, and Minehead once again found themselves under pressure. Despite a determined and disciplined defensive effort, and some excellent saves by keeper Lou, they were unable to hold out completely. A loose, bobbling ball inside the penalty area eventually fell kindly for Wellington, who converted to level the scores late on.
