MINEHEAD Blues bowed out of the Taunton & District Youth League’s Under 12 Cup after a spirited home performance against Staplegrove Sinners, battling bravely in extremely challenging conditions before losing 4-0.
Staplegrove registered a couple of early shots on target, but Minehead keeper Lou was equal to both efforts. The heavy ground continued to play its part as Minehead midfielder Leon unleashed a powerful strike that took a wicked bounce just in front of the Staplegrove goalkeeper, who did well to react quickly and gather.
Staplegrove broke the deadlock when their winger picked up the ball near the halfway line, before swinging into the box to score.
Minehead almost found themselves further behind moments later after a goal kick bounced awkwardly, gifting Staplegrove an opportunity, but Lou once again came to the rescue.
As the first half wore on, Staplegrove began to assert more control and eventually doubled their lead. Minehead tried to respond before the break, Leon going close again.
Staplegrove thought they had added a third early in the second half, but the ‘goal’ was disallowed.
This lifted Minehead and midfielder George had two attempts in quick succession—one shot narrowly wide and another well saved by the visiting keeper.
Staplegrove continued to press, forcing a superb save from Lou. Further chances followed for the visitors, with shots flashing wide after a wing run and sustained pressure.
Grove’s third goal came in unfortunate fashion for Minehead, as a defender made a split-second attempt to block the ball, only for it to deflect off his foot and into his own net. At 3–0 down, Minehead refused to give in, continuing to chip away in search of a consolation goal.
A late corner offered hope but came to nothing and Staplegrove sealed the result with a late strike. Parents players of the match: Jack; Coaches player of the match: Riley
