MINEHEAD Blues travelled to play Bridgwater Wolves in their first match of the season in Division Two of the Under 12 section of the Taunton & District Youth Football League - and came away with a narrow 3-2 loss.
Minehead started confidently and after only two minutes midfielder Fin headed towards the right corner flag before crossing the ball into the box. The ball bobbled about before striker Henry managed to get a toe to it and place it in the back of the net.
Later in the first half Wolves managed to get one back, taking the game to 1 all at half time.
The Blues were put under heavy pressure at the beginning of the second half, with Wolves scoring a further goal to put them ahead at 2-1.
Minehead then responded, with good footwork by Fin just outside the six yard box and slotting the ball past the goalie to equal the score.
Minehead worked hard to try to retake the lead, with two excellent free kicks by Leon, one needing to be saved by the Wolves goalie in the top right corner and the other just missing the bottom left.
A lucky Wolves goal in the closing minutes saw Minehead go 3-2 down, and despite pushing forwards they were not able to find the equaliser. During the final minutes goalie Lou made a number of excellent saves to keep Minehead’s hopes alive, one of which was one on one with the Wolves striker.
The final score was 3-2 but the Blues could easily have come away with a draw if luck had gone their way.
Minehead Parents player of the match: Leon for his footwork and work rate in the midfield. Coaches player of the match: Reuben for solid performance in defence.
