MINEHEAD Blues travelled to play Combe St Nicholas Youth Raiders in Division Two of the Under 12 section in the Taunton & District Youth Football League on Saturday, 27th September ,in what proved to be a very close fought match, which eventually went in favour of the home side 2-0.
Minehead, having only the bare nine players from the outset due to sickness and injury, started well, holding off early Combe St Nicholas pressure. Late in the first half Combe St Nicholas took the score to 1-0 - thanks to a lucky bounce, with the ball tricking into the bottom left corner of the goal.
During the second half Minehead had a number of good scoring chances, which unfortunately did not come to fruition. A good run through the centre of the field by forward Henry led to his strike hitting the bar, and a second by midfielder Leon leading to his strike going just over.
But with Minehead legs tiring and no substitutes available against the five pairs of fresh legs Combe St Nicholas substituted on, Minehead did well to remain in the game. The final goal came from a well defended free kick just outside the box, with the Combe St Nicholas strike bounding off the wall only to fall well for the attackers to score their second. Final score: Combe St Nicholas 2 – 0 Minehead.
Parents player of the match: Fin for his continuous hard work through the midfield. Coaches player of the match: George, again for his continuous hard work through the midfield.
Minehead find themselves on their travels again this coming weekend, October 5, when they play Spaxton Juniors who have made a fine start to the season and will provide a good test for the Minehead youngsters.
