WATCHET moved up to third place in the Premier Division when they completed another double over relegation-threatened Berrow at the Memorial Ground on a bitterly cold Tuesday evening.
With a stiff, biting wind playing tricks with the ball off a firm surface, it wasn’t until the second half that the Red and Blacks made their superiority count to run out 4-0 winners.
The home side almost took the lead in the first minute when Zac Ryder bulldozed his way into the penalty area but was denied by a fine save from the keeper.
With the elements largely in their favour, Berrow’s pacey front runners kept the home defence at full stretch, although keeper Adam Bishop was largely unemployed.
The goal Watchet had threatened came when a corner driven in from the left by Aaron Deeks was just too high for Aerron Clausen at the near post but took a touch off another player and fell conveniently at the opposite upright for Eben Harding to turn it in.
Ben Robinson produced a surging run down the right followed by a cross, Chris Sully’s through ball almost put Ryder in on goal and Jason Worth was baulked by a last-ditch tackle before the keeper came to Berrow’s rescue again with a full length save to thwart Deeks.
The half-time interval arrived with Watchet having been largely in control but needing the security of a second goal.
They did not start the second half too well until a sweeping move led to Brandon Walsh’s shot on the turn bringing another smart stop from the keeper.
It was just before the hour that they doubled their lead when full back Harding picked up the ball just inside the visitors’ half and his solo run took him past four defenders and into the penalty area, where he kept his head to fire a left-foot shot into the net.
Now playing with more confidence ,further goals could have followed, with Deeks shooting high and wide and then just past an upright after cleverly making space on the edge of the area.
Ryder volleyed into the side-netting from close range, and when the ball dropped to Sully six yards out a defender made a brave block to avert the danger.
Jamie Milton drove a 25-yard free-kick a whisker wide before a third goal came when a neat build-up led to Charley Clausen squaring the ball for Walsh to hit first time and it took a deflection on its way past the keeper.
Berrow mustered a few off-target attempts and a couple which failed to trouble Bisho,p and Watchet had the final word when Deeks again engineered space for himself down the middle and made no mistake to complete the scoring.
