PORLOCK were back in action in the Taunton & District Saturday Football League and, for the second time since the turn of the year, they were on the road in Taunton where they played Staplegrove Reserves in the Premier Division - and gained a hard-earned 1-0 success.

Buoyed by recent successes, Porlock came out of the blocks sharply, stringing passes together and breaking down the Staplegrove back line. However they were unable to capitalise, with the home goal keeper making some good saves and the Porlock attack just putting the ball narrowly wide.

Staplegrove started to grow into the game and round the mid point of the first half a counter attack nearly troubled the Porlock goal keeper but as the winger went around the ‘keeper he slipped over and Darren Sherring was able to gather up the ball.

With the end of the first half drawing to a close, 0-0 seemed a fair outcome as neither of the teams were able to put the ball in the back of the net.

As the second half started Porlock manager James Griffiths introduced some fresh legs in Jari High and Joe Fitzsimmons which appeared to have desired affect as moments after the whistle was blown to release the teams for the second half, Fitzsimmons pinched the ball off the Staplegrove right back and just narrowly dragged it wide with his shot.

As the clock was counting down Griffiths then introduced new signing Brooklyn Anthony and Lewis Goodrum to release both of the pacey youngsters. A slight tactical change with the subs saw Fitzsimmons return to the centre of the front three. He immediately made an impact as a great driving run from Ollie Morris saw him slide the ball through to Fitzsimmons who returned the favour with a well weighted back heel pass back to Morris who knocked the ball past the keeper to put Porlock one nil up with only five minutes of the match remaining.

For the last few minutes of the match Staplegrove threw everything they had at Porlock looking for the equaliser. However the Porlock back line of Declan Paterson, Ryan Parsons, Harry Kivell and Goodrum were determined to keep the clean sheet - and this they just did.

As Staplegrove delivered their last cross it was met by the boot of Kivell who cleared the ball deep in the Staplegrove half as the referee blew the whistle to end the match. Porlock traveled back to West Somerset with three more valuable points and a valuable clean sheet against a team that in previous years have had the upper hand over them

Next up for Porlock is a match against league leaders Wembdon. With Porlock only three points off the top spot and a bitter taste in their mouth from Wembdon dumping them out in the quarter final of the Rowbarton Charity Cup last week, the lads will be on the hunt to upset the Wembdon title hopes.

Porlock’s starting line up - Darren Sherring, Mikey Mullen, Ryan Parsons, Harry Kivell, Declan Paterson, Cody Truscott, Adam Langdon (capt), Ollie Morris, Braden Taylor, Caleb Laney and Finley Priddle. Subs (all used) - Jari High, Joe Fitzsimmons, Brooklyn Anthony and Lewis Goodrum.

Premier Division results: Bridgwater Grasshoppers 3, Wellington A 1; Staplegrove Reserves 0, Porlock 1; Wyvern United 1, Dunwear United 2.
