A GRITTY showing from Watchet Town was still not enough to bring them any reward when they went down by 2 goals to 1 at Congresbury in their latest match in the Premier Division of the Uhslport Somerset County League.
Again Watchet travelled light with two players stepping up from the reserves to make their senior debuts, plus two more players who have only made a handful of appearances this season included in their squad of 12.
The visitors made early inroads with Connor Shopland advancing from midfield into the box, but Todd Willis missed his kick with his attempted shot.
Congresbury made the most of this by taking the lead when a corner was met with a firm diving header at the near post which flew into the net.
On his first outing keeper Regan Gallagher had already made one fine save before getting down low to his left to turn another effort onto an upright. He then advanced to touch a shot out for a corner after a forward appeared to trip Eben Harding to run clean through.
The Watchet bar was struck prior to the home doubling their lead before the interval.
Congresbury remained on top after the break and Watchet were indebted to some resolute defending, more good saves from Gallagher while their woodwork was hit again along with some wasteful finishing.
After teenager Zacc Binding had come on for a tiring Lewis Rogers, the visitors were handed a lifetime late in the game when the keeper was adjudged to have impeded Billy Jones as they tussled for the ball and Charley Clausen sent the resulting penalty into the roof of the net.
Watchet Town: Regan Gallagher, Josh Aspey, Harvey Henderson, Eben Harding, Connor Jeromson, Lewis Rogers, Nigel Bremner, Connor Shopland, Charley Clausen, Billy Jones, Todd Willis. Sub Zacc Binding. MOM - Regan Gallagher.
