ALCOMBE Rovers’ fine run in the first division of the Taunton & District Saturday Football League came to an end when they crashed 5-1 away to Bridgwater Sports after a performance marked by early mistakes, lapses in concentration, and missed opportunities.
The hosts were gifted the opening goal just three minutes into the match when a misplaced pass from the Alcombe defence allowed Bridgwater a simple tap-in. The game opened up, but Rovers struggled to find rhythm, and another error moments later handed the home side their second goal, putting Alcombe under early pressure.
Bridgwater looked to extend their advantage from the penalty spot after the referee controversially ruled that Mike Graddon had fouled the striker despite minimal contact. The decision shocked the visitors, but goalkeeper Carl Paige produced a spectacular save to deny a third goal and keep Alcombe in the contest.
Despite the moment of relief, Bridgwater continued to punish every mistake, adding a third before half-time. Rovers entered the break with a mountain to climb.
The second half was more balanced in spells, with Alcombe finally showing urgency and attacking intent. Several chances came and went before Bridgwater struck twice more, extending their advantage to 5–0. A well-taken finish from Sam Harley gave Alcombe a consolation goal, but it did not change the complexion of the match. On the day, Bridgwater showed greater sharpness while Rovers’ errors proved costly.
After the match, player-manager Brian Hall offered a measured and positive reflection: “Rovers have been unbeaten since the first game of the season. The boys have been great and we’ve added real strength to the squad. Football is about winning and losing; on this occasion we lose, but we learn.”
A disappointing result, but one the squad will use as motivation heading into the next fixture.
