WATCHET may be struggling in the league this season, but they have performed well in the new Davies-Bishop Trophy 20-over competition.

And they are pictured with the trophy after beating Middlezoy in the inaugural final on Monday night at Staplegrove’s ground.

Middlezoy are fourth in the division above Watchet in the Somerset League, and they opted to bat first on a scorching evening, hoping to make use of fielding in better conditions later on.

But Watchet had other ideas, and probing lines saw opening bowlers Mark Bryant and Dominic Bowden rip through the top order to leave the Premier Division side 8-4 after just 3.1 overs.

Dillow and Jones set about trying to make a competitive total, but tight bowling through the middle overs from Martin Strong and Liam Woolgrove forced them into taking risks and they slumped to 35-6 after ten overs.

Skipper Barnard was joined by Keith and they had to be content with taking singles as Watchet fielded well and kept the pressure on.

Only four twos and eight boundaries were scored as Middlezoy were restricted to a below par 93-6, with both Barnard and Keith finishing unbeaten on 27.

Watchet’s run chase got off to a steady start with 19 on the board before they lost their first wicket.

That sparked a mini-collapse with two more quick wickets falling to leave them on 27-3 after seven overs.

They went into the last ten overs requiring a further 57 runs with plenty of wickets in hand, and Adam Bishop then took the attack to new bowler Musgrave, taking 13 off one over to put Watchet seemingly in command.

However, another mini slump saw three wickets fall for just just two runs, giving the Premier Division side a sniff at victory.

But captain Ryan Strong made sure of a Watchet victory with an aggressive 29no, supported well by Ben Robinson with some fantastic running between the wickets.

A lofted straight drive from Strong saw Watchet clinch the inaugural Davies-Bishop Trophy with four wickets and 2.5 overs in hand.
