MINEHEAD Cricket Club’s three senior team were without action last weekend. The First XI were without a fixture following the late withdrawal of Shapwick and Polden Seconds from the Premier Division of the Somerset Cricket League, while the rain put paid to the Second and Third XI fixtures.

A barren weekend on the playing front provides an opportunity to review how the teams have fared in their respective leagues to date.

After five games Minehead First XI currently find themselves in fifth place in the Premier Division of the Somerset League, having won two and lost three of their fixtures to date.

Reflecting on the season to date First XI captain Dan Bowditch said: “We have had a bit of a mixed start, and have probably lost a couple of games that we should have won and not played well enough to win the others, and at the moment are in mid table.

“I think our best result was the win away at North Petherton who are like us not as strong as some in the league so those are the ones we have got to win, which we did.

“Alfie Ruckledge took six wickets at Petherton which was excellent and he also bowled well in the Baker Cup at Taunton St Andrews, so is in good form at the moment. He has got great potential and is available for us this weekend which is good news.

“Most of the boys in the team are local and have come up through our junior system, so we all know each other pretty well and there is a great buzz about the club.

“At the start of the season we wondered whether we’d have enough players to run three sides, but instead of that most weeks we have got too many, which is great news for us.”

This weekend the Pirates make the trip to the other end of the county to face Frome ahead to which the skipper said: “It’s along old way to Frome who are only one place above us in the league . We have got another strong side out so hopefully we will go up there and give them a good game.”

Minehead Second XI compete in Division Three of the SCL and to date have played five matches, three of which have been won, they have lost one while one match has been cancelled and they currently are fourth in the table.

On Saturday MCC Second XI are at home to Taunton Indian CC who are second in the table behind the leaders South Petherton.

Minehead Third XI compete in the West Somerset League Division Three where they have played six matches, one of which they have won, four they have lost and one been cancelled, and they occupy fifth place in the table. Unfortunately they are without a game this weekend but will be hoping to return to action on 21st June when they are away to Ashbrittle Seconds.

All three of Minehead’s junior sides are due to play this weekend. On Friday evening Minehead Under 13s are at home to Glastonbury in an 11 a side game, while two days later on Sunday 15th June MCC Under 15s travel to play against North Curry and the Under 11s host their Brompton Ralph counterparts.
