BUDDING cricketers in West Somerset will be inspired by former Somerset cricketer and South African international Alfonso Thomas, when he presents the prizes at the Primary Schools Cricket Tournament at West Somerset Leisure Centre in Minehead on June 17.

The tournament is a joint enterprise between 1610, which manages the centre, and Minehead Cricket Club to encourage more youngsters to get involved in the sport and have fun with friends.

The Pairs Kwik Cricket tournament will involve teams of six and some of the proceeds from it will go towards the mental health charity Mind, which is 1610’s charity of the year.

1610 and Minehead Cricket Club have been working in partnership to develop cricket in the area, and the club recently funded training for a senior activity leader at the leisure centre, Connor Williams, to qualify as a level two cricket coach.

Connor was mentored by cricketer Dan Bowditch and completed many voluntary coaching hours to qualify for the role.

The tournament is due to get underway at 4.30pm on Friday June 17 and the cost is £20per team, which includes a £5 donation to Mind. Some funding towards entry fees is available from Minehead Cricket Club.

Tea, coffee, cakes and other refreshments will be available for Mind, and there will be certificates for all who take part and medals for winners and runners-up.
